Jan 6, 1994 an unknown assailant attacks figure skater Nancy Kerrigan at the US national championships in Detroit, MI. The person ran by her, just after Nancy left the ice, and hit her hard on her right knee. Coincidentally Tany Harding wins the US Ladies Figure Skating Championship in Detroit a few days later. Later, harding's ex-husband Jeff Gillooly, her bodyguard, Shawn Eckardt are found responsible for the attack. Gillooly changes his last name to Stone, attempting to escape the notoriaty of the attack. Later that year, the US Figure Skating Association took Tonya's 1994 national championship title and banned her from the organization for life.
